Journey into the Ancient City of Anuradhapura
Imagine walking through a city where time seems to stand still. Towering white stupas rise against the sky, serene ponds shimmer in the sunlight, and the whisper of history follows you with every step. This is Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka’s first great capital and one of the most sacred cities in the world.
Founded more than 2,500 years ago by King Pandukabhaya, Anuradhapura blossomed into the spiritual and cultural heart of the island. It was here, in the 3rd century BC, that King Devanampiyatissa welcomed Arahat Mahinda, the messenger of Buddhism, changing the course of Sri Lanka’s history forever. Not long after, a sapling of the very Bodhi Tree under which the Buddha attained Enlightenment was planted here. Today, that same tree – the Sri Maha Bodhi – still spreads its shade, making it the oldest living tree in the world with a written history.
As you wander through the sacred city, each monument tells a story. The Ruwanwelisaya Stupa, gleaming white against the sun, speaks of King Dutugemunu’s devotion and his dream of uniting the nation. The Jetavanaramaya Stupa, once among the tallest structures on earth, shows the sheer ambition of ancient kings and the skill of their craftsmen. In the quiet of the Samadhi Buddha Statue, you’ll find a timeless expression of peace, while the Twin Ponds (Kuttam Pokuna) reveal the brilliance of the engineers who built sophisticated water systems centuries ago.
Life in Anuradhapura once revolved around its great monasteries, where thousands of monks lived, studied, and prayed. The city’s reservoirs, like Tissa Wewa, ensured prosperity for generations, and even today, they reflect the golden hues of the setting sun, just as they did in ancient times.
Your journey through Anuradhapura can be as gentle or as immersive as you wish – a half-day tour of the highlights or a full-day exploration that unveils every layer of its history. Our Resident Manager, a qualified national tour guide, will craft an itinerary that brings the past alive in a way that resonates with you.
